The Chairman of the Sokoto State Chapter of Bureau De Change Operators’ Association, Alhaji Aliyu Sahabi Yar Abba has urged the Federal Government to consider reopening Nigeria”s borders.
Yar Abba said in statement in Sokoto on Wednesday that, though the closure of the nation’s borders with its neighbors was well intentioned, it has seriously taken a toll on commercial and trading activities.
This lamentable development, he noted, mostly aftects the northern parts of the country, especially in the frontline states and local governments.
According to Yar Abba, the ugly situation would be greatly assuaged if the Federal Government rescinds its decision and reopen the borders.
The BDC’s Chairman further decried that, security challenges had negatively affected trading and farming actihities in most of the northern states .
Yar Abba added, ” Most of the farmers can no longer farm as they have largely been internally displaced and this is a formidable threat to the national food security.
” The ongoing measures being taken by the government to stem the tide of insecurity should be intensified, to redress the obnoxious trend.
” The Anchor Borrower’s Programme should also be father enhanced , so as to ensure the timely provision of the facilities and quality seeds and inputs, while only genuine farmers should benefit from it.”
Yar Abba further urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to sustain the current commendable temoo other providing adequate foreign exchange to the BDCs,so as to boost commerce and trade.
