To: President Bola Ahmed Tunubu, His Excellency the Governor of Oyo State and the Inspector General of Police ,
With deep respect and heartfelt concern, we write this letter as a collective voice for compassion and understanding regarding the tragic events that unfolded at the children’s Christmas funfair organized by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, former Queen of Ife.
The purpose of this event, inspired by an honoris causa spirit of philanthropy, was to bring joy, hope, and support to children and vulnerable members of society during a time of economic hardship. Prophetess Naomi, a woman of faith and goodwill, sought to uplift and empower those in need, reflecting her long-standing commitment to charitable causes.
The devastating stampede that resulted in the loss of innocent lives is an unspeakable tragedy that has left the entire nation grieving. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and share in their pain. However, it is essential to recognize that this unfortunate incident was neither planned nor anticipated. Prophetess Naomi, like all of us, is heartbroken by this calamity.
The arrest and detention of Prophetess Naomi do not reflect the intention behind her actions. Her efforts were born of kindness and compassion, not negligence or malice. While accountability and thorough investigations are necessary, we must also acknowledge that accidents, however devastating, can occur even in the most well-intentioned endeavors.
Furthermore, we must caution against the unintended consequences of Prophetess Naomi’s continued detention. Such actions risk discouraging other potential benefactors from extending their resources to support the poor and vulnerable across the country. If individuals are penalized for acts of philanthropy due to unforeseen tragedies, society may inadvertently create a culture of fear and reluctance among those who seek to give back. Similar tragedies have occurred at government-organized events, yet these do not deter the collective aspiration to alleviate suffering. It is vital to ensure that this tragedy does not become a precedent that stifles the spirit of generosity.
We, therefore, appeal to the relevant authorities to consider the following:
1. Her Intentions: The event was conceived as an act of goodwill to benefit the poor and vulnerable.
2. Her Contribution: Prophetess Naomi has consistently demonstrated a commitment to serving humanity, and this event was part of that legacy.
3. Her Grief: She is as devastated by the loss of these children as the families involved, and her actions following the tragedy have reflected remorse and a willingness to cooperate.
We humbly request that Prophetess Naomi Silekunola be granted release on humanitarian grounds, allowing her to grieve, support the affected families, and continue her philanthropic work. This appeal is not a denial of the tragedy but a plea for compassion and understanding in the face of unintentional human error.
Let this be an opportunity for us to come together as a society, not to cast blame but to ensure such tragedies never occur again. Let us honor the memory of the children lost by fostering unity, healing, and positive change.
With sincere hope and faith in justice,
