…. ALSO OPPOSES TAX REFORM BILLS AMID ECONOMIC STRUGGLES
Over the weekend, Senator Tambuwal engaged in a series of impactful initiatives across his constituency, including the distribution of much-needed relief materials to flood victims and the distribution of working tools to empower local youths and women. At the same time, he voiced strong opposition to the controversial Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly, urging President Bola Tinubu to reconsider its passage.
In a statement Signed by Senator Sminu Waziri Tambuwal Media office that made available to news men revealed that
On Saturday, Senator Tambuwal visited Shagari Local Government to oversee the distribution of flood relief materials. These supplies, provided by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with his office, aim to assist those affected by the recent floods in Tureta, Shagari, and Tambuwal. The lawmaker praised the Director-General of NEMA for spearheading this crucial initiative, emphasizing the importance of timely relief for flood victims.
“I commend the Director-General of NEMA for this vital initiative, which will provide much-needed support to those in dire need,” the senator said.
On Sunday, Senator Tambuwal presided over the distribution of working tools to over 1,500 women and youths in Bodinga Local Government, who had completed skill acquisition training sponsored through Assubhan General Contractors and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE). The tools distributed included sewing machines, wheelbarrows, vulcanizing and plumbing tools, tiling machines, refrigerators, and carpentry tools, among others. This initiative is part of the senator’s ongoing efforts to empower women and youth, helping them become more self-sufficient and economically independent.
However, the senator’s most emphatic remarks came regarding the ongoing debate about the Tax Reform Bills. After engaging with his constituents, he made it clear that there is overwhelming opposition to the bill, which includes proposals to review the Value Added Tax (VAT) and introduce new taxes.
“In light of the current economic struggles faced by many Nigerians, this is not the right time to review VAT or impose new taxes,” Senator Tambuwal stated. “The government must focus on easing financial burdens rather than imposing further strain on the people.”
He also called on President Tinubu to heed the advice of the National Economic Council and other respected voices in the country, warning that decisions driven by personal or ego-driven motivations could harm the nation.
The senator referenced historical precedents set by former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, both of whom withdrew significant bills in the interest of national stability. “In our democratic history, both President Obasanjo and President Jonathan made similar decisions to withdraw key bills for the benefit of the nation. I believe President Tinubu should take a similar approach,” he remarked.
In conclusion, Senator Tambuwal urged the president to reconsider the Tax Reform Bills and ensure that the voices of the majority of Nigerians are heard in any future decisions regarding tax policy. “It is crucial that the people’s concerns are given priority, particularly during these challenging times,” he added.
His firm stance on the Tax Bills has sparked significant debate across political circles, with many closely monitoring further developments on the issue.
