Sokoto conducts LGs Polls today and the election is going on  Peacefully

Local Governments Chairmen and 244 Councillors are being elected today, Saturday, March 27,2021, for the 23 Local Governments in Sokoto State.

 

 

The polls were beng conducted by the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), under the Chairmanship of Alhaji Aliyu Suleiman.

 

 

Nine political parties, including the ruling Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), are participating in the elections.

 

 

The main opposition political party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is boycotting the elections, as announced by it’s acting State Chairman, Alhaji Isa Sadiq Achida, at a Press Conference,last month .

 

 

The nine political parties had on Thursday jointly signed a peace accord, to ensure the peaceful conduct of the polls .

 

 

Reports from across the state revealed that, the polls had since commenced in majority of the polling stations across the state.

 

 

There was also heavy security arrangements ,especially in the areas prone to security challenges like cattle rustling, kidnappings and banditry, particularly those local governments in the Eastern axis of the state.

 

 

The State Police Command has placed restrictions on vehicular movements from 6am to 4pm, as stated by a statement from it’s spokesperson, ASP Sanusi Abubakar.

 

 

Reports also revealed an impressive participation of voters, especially by women in most parts of the state, although there was a reported voter apathy in some areas .

 

It has however been learnt that, the elections were so far going on peacefully across the state.
