Professor Ibrahim Muhammad Sule is the Director of the distance learning center under the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, he said that they are doing seventeen 17 degrees in this educational institution.
This system of studying from home through the internet is not a new thing if you look at the history of education in Nigeria and for those with 50 to 60 years old, a system is being made from London to bring questions and students here to write exams.
And if you look back before the first university in Ibadan started because it was the first university in Nigeria, if you can remember there were some people who studied law like Afe Babalola. It is not forgotten that they studied law in this field, therefore, in the history of education, studying from home or studying online is not something new and is accepted by the law or Nigerian constitution.
“It was first organized from home and later there was a radio station and they were teaching their students through the radio until there was e-mail on the internet website, so this system is something that was started a long time ago.
“Only the scientific knowledge is enough to make it a system since the time when books were published and sent by post, radio and telephone until today it is done on the Internet, so it is not something new and is permanent but the only that there are available changes.
The professor also said that the governing body of Nigerian universities has given the opportunity to this institution in Ahmadu Bello University to do seventeen degrees.
And in this number there are nine that are called first degree and eight that are second degree like master degrees and two or three and all are major degrees.
They include a degree in business studies, a degree in governance, then the study nursing because we do not o’ level results but those who have completed a diploma in that field, a degree in the field of political science, a degree in social work and degrees in humanities, degrees in economics, degrees in international or foreign affairs and degrees in computer science.
In the system, there is a master’s degree in business education, a master’s degree in diplomacy, international relations, and a master’s degree in public health, law and criminal justice, and we hope to add more by the end of this year, God willing.
“Since Obasanjo gave the university to study from home the opportunity to start working, since then there has been a law on the ground that a person who has a degree in a university to study from home and a person who has a degree in a center like ours and and those who went to school, stayed and got a degree, they all have the same status, that is, they have the same value, there is no difference whether they went to work, they all have the same value.
And what a person needs if he wants to be accepted in the school and to go to the curriculum until the time a person completes and give him a certificate, just like I told you it’s all the same thing everyone who goes to school stays and does It is face-to-face with the teacher and those who are studying from home do not meet face-to-face with the teacher directly.
Actually there is an explanation to encourage that a child will be taught online, but in two places, a person comes face to face with him, the first is to sit for a while and review what was taught online and secondly, there is a test, the university commission emphasizes that these two things must be done face to face, face to face.
The professor assured the media that this system has helped to reduce crowding in the universities because there are some courses that the university could not take or give admission before but now the whole situation is only history because they are taking students who want to study because of the ease.
