At least , 140 Northwest women farmers in Kebbi state benefitted from N70 million doled out by the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu under her pet project , Renewed Hope Initiative agricultural support programme for women.
The initiative is to further drive Federal Government efforts at boosting and sustaining massive food production and security.
Mrs Tinubu represented by wife of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Hajiya Fatima Tajuddeen Abbas at the inauguration said each beneficiary would get N500,000 to boost their agricultural production.
” 20 women from each of the seven states in the zone from the gesture initiated in fulfilment of the promise to continue to support women farmers throughout the nation.”
According to the first lady, the administration of the President has recorded glowing improvement in food sufficiency which has strengthened agriculture.
In his remarks , Kebbi state Governor Dr Nasiru Idris who stressed the remarkable contributions of women towards boosting agriculture pointed out that they were a driving force for sustained food sufficiency.
He said his government was resolute at building a future that would continue to provide the space for women to be fully and profitably engaged in meaningful activities for self reliance.
” We are ready to strengthen efforts by investing in that direction”, while
adding that “women play a crucial role in feeding Nigeria and the world at large.”
Idris who also wears the title of Kauran Gwandu said the initiative would no doubt enhance the capacity of women and sustain their successes and prosperity while assuring that the state government will focus more on activities tailored at empowering more women and youths farmers.
He explained that the concept of the initiative was aimed at redefining the capacity and abilities of women and youths in promoting sustainable agricultural activities in the process of nation building.
“We will continue to provide women with access to technology and finance, while they will continue to be valued”
Governor Idris, however disclosed that his administration had in the last ten months spent over N28 billion to take the agricultural sector to greater heights.
” We purchased and distributed N3.4bn worth of fertilizer to farmers free in addition to N13bn worth of assorted grains all free for farmers in the state between July 2023 to date.
” Also distributed worth N4.8 bn assorted grains to people of the state free during the just concluded Ramadan “, he enumerated.
Speaking earlier, Wife of the Governor , Hajiya Zainab Nasare Idris while applauding the purposeful efforts of Mrs Remi Tinubu disclosed that on her part , She donated solar-powered water pumps to the benefitting women farmers from the zone to boost their yields.
She noted with passion Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s magnanimity and the choice of Kebbi state to launch the programme for the North West Region.
The presentation of cheques to the 140 women farmers by the wife of the Speaker climaxed the event that attracted dignitaries , women and youth groups from across the zone.
