The Chairman, Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Senator Ibrahim Abdullahi Gobir ( APC-Sokoto State, has mulled the withdrawal of the military from performing any internal security duties , like the ongoing fight against banditry, insurgency, kidnapping , cattle rustling and other related security challenges.
Senator Gobir, who represents Sokoto East Senatorial District, commented on Friday, on last Wednesday’s brutal attack on the Gangara community , Sabon Birni Local Government of Sokoto State .
The dastardly attack resulted in the death of no fewer than twenty two innocent persons , myriad others injured , dozens yet to be accounted for , while assorted property were also destroyed .
In a statement signed by Senator ( Dr ) Ibrahim Abdullahi Gobir, representing Sokoto East Senatorial District revealed that the obnoxious, ferocious attack by dozens of gun-wielding bandits on motorcycles , averred,” the military should be withradwn from performing any form of operation, to provide internal security.
” This is because, it is not their responsibility to provide internal security , its not their job, but that of the Police .
” There should therefore be the massive recruitment of more able-bodied , qualified youths into the Nigeria Police .
” They should also be fully and adequately deployed to the seven hundred and seventy four local governments in the country .”
Senator Gobir further opined that , each of the Local Governments should also be provided with no fewer than five Hilux Vans, fully equipped with sirens and other modern communication gadgets .
In the same vein, they should be adequately provided with modern weaponry , ammunition and other related logistics .
According to the Lawmaker, the training , retraining and motivation of the Officers and men of the Nigeria Police , military and other paramilitary agencies should be accorded a top priority.
He added,” this would deter the criminals from perpetuating their heinous acts , as well as encourage the Officers and men of the Nigeria and their colleagues to do their possible best , to redress the ugly trend.
” At the National Assembly, we will continue to do our best to provide these direly needed funds , their timely release and ensure their proper utilization .”
