Sokoto Governor Clampdowns on Traditional Rulers

In what is widely viewed as a continuing political onslaught,  the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu has summoned  high-profile traditional rulers in the State perceived to be sympathetic to the immediate past administration to answer a petitions against them from certain subjects of their domains.

An information from Credible source revealed that

The letters of invitation, which were served on seventeen District Heads and Kingmakers by their respective Local Government Sole Administrators, ordered them to appear before a probe committee, headed by the State APC Chairman, Isa Sadiq Achida.

We authoritatively gathered that the session with the rulers was held at State Government Villa 2, Lodge Road, adjacent to Government House, in Sokoto. Those invited to face the clampdown, who are senior councilors and kingmakers of the Sultanate, include Sarkin Yakin Binji, Sarkin Kabin Yabo, Baraden Wamakko and Sa’in Kilgori.

Others are Sarkin Gobir Isa,  Sarkin Yakin Gagi, Marafan Alkammu, Sarkin yamman dogon daji, Sarkin Gabas of Tulluwa, Sarkin Kudun Giyawa, Sarkin Yamman Unguwar Lalle, Sarkin Gobir Asara, Sarkin Kabbin Kebbe, Sarkin Rafin Illela and Sarkin Yamman Kuchi.

A copy of the summons, obtained by our publication shows that the invitation did not quote the issues in question against the traditional rulers but we learnt that they were subjected to hash reprimands for their alleged roles during the 2023 electioneering campaigns.

It can be recalled that at the inception of his administration, Ahmed Aliyu had reversed the new appointments of a number of traditional rulers that were recommended by the Sultanate Council and approved by the his predecessor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

He also set up a probe panel on existing chiefs, which called for petitions against what they described as errant traditional rulers, who conducted themselves in a manner unbecoming of the institution. The panel was chaired by the former Police Affairs Minister, Maigari Dingyadi but seemed comatose, until it was later reconstituted to be lead by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Aminu Dikko.

Observers of Sokoto State politics suspect that the current development is being inspired by Ahmed Aliyu’s godfather, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, who as State Governor, had soured relations with a number of traditional rulers, leading to the removal of some of them.

During Wamakko’s skirmish with the rulers, Sarkin Kabin Yabo, Alhaji Maiturare, who is among the chiefs currently being probed, was transfered to the less prominent District of Dandin Mahe, until he was re-instated in Yabo by Governor Tambuwal, when the stool became vacant.
