An outbreak of gastroenteritis (diarrhea), has so far claimed no fewer than two students at the Government Girls’ College ( GGC), Sokoto.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr Kulu Haruna, when she addressed Newsmen in Sokoto.

She said that, the deceased students had since been buried according to Islamic rites.

Dr Kulu Haruna also stated that, out of the seventy affected students who were earlier hospitalized as a result of the outbreak, only twenty five remained on admission, while they were responding to treatment.

The Commissioner lauded the State Ministry of Health for immediately swinging into action, saying that, the swift action by the Ministry greatly helped to control the ugly situation.

The state Government had since closed the school, although it’s management maintained that, it was only for two weeks, to facilitate thorough investigations.

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal had also during a visit to the school disclosed that, the closure had not affected the students on exchange programme .

It could be recalled that, the state government had recently closed some schools located in insecurity prone Local Governments.

The closed Schools were merged with others in Sokoto Metropolis, like the GGC and Hafsat Ahmadu Girls Arabic Secondary School, all in Sokoto.

The State Government has however insisted that, it was only a temporary action, pending when the security situation in the state improves.
