Network of peace journalists commend Nigerians for the conduct of peaceful Gubernatorial/ State Assembly Elections.

 

The Network of Peace Journalists on the Community Initiatives to Promote Peace (CIPP), program with coordination from Interfaith Mediation Centre (IMC), Kaduna State commended Nigerians for the peaceful conduct of gubernatorial and States House of Assembly Elections.

While commending the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), for their timely distribution of Election Materials to various polling units across the States and around the country.

In a statement made available to the press this morning by the Team leader of the network Ibrahima Yakubu who equally applauded the States and Federal Government for the deployment of massive security across the country towards maintaning peace and order with the aim of having a successful conduct of the elections.

Ibrahima also applauded traditional leaders, religious leaders, para-military, civilians, CSO’s, FBO’s, People Living with Disability, Media groups, Youth groups, Women groups, local community Associations, Conflict Mitigation and Management Regional Council (CMMRC), Community Peace Observers (CPOs) in the CIPP locations (Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Benue and Plateau) and other networks in the country, Local and Foreign Observers as well as the Electorates for the peaceful conduct of the election.

Ibrahima expressed satisfaction over the Gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly Elections that result collation is ongoing across the Country saying; he believes it will serve as lessons learned
as our nation progresses on our nascent democracy.

While calling on all candidates that were not successful during the elections to embrace the results as announced by INEC to accept it in good faith for peace and stability in the country, except for those that are not comfortable with the outcome of the result to seek redress at the appropriate institutions saddled with such powers.

The network warned citizens against the spread of fake news on the social media amidst of the Gubernatorial and States House of Assembly elections results on social media platforms.

Stressing citizens should be cautious of news on facebook, twitters, instagram, WhatsApp platforms.

He appealed to all the citizens to access their news from credible media organizations.

According to him during elections seasons like this, fake news uses to dominate the social media and hence the need to Sensitizes the general public on dangers associated with fake news amidst of INEC results.

He equally raised an alarm of unprofessionalism and spread of fake news on the social media by quack Journalists.

He further commended, patriotic Nigerians for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner during the presidential/ National Assembly and Gubernatorial and State House of Assembly elections in many locations in the country.

He once again thanked all the media organizations, across the country for their marvelous contributions towards promoting peace journalism for the promotion of peace and unity among Nigerians.

He commended Nigerian Union of Journalists for opening – up situation room during and after the elections.

While stressing that the National Secretariat has set up a Situation Room with hotlines for journalists who come under attack during and after the 2023 elections.

Although only one journalist was reported to have been humiliated in Nigeria during the gubernatorial elections
