Another Northern Group, the Arewa Legacy Defenders (ALD) has joined in the barrage against Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed over his recent calls for President Muhammadu Buhari’s resignation and frontal attacks on the Convener of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Professor Ango Abdullahi.
Baba-Ahmed has for the past few weeks indulged in persistent calls for President Buhari’s resignation and outbursts against the NEF leader Abdullahi earning him cheers from largely the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Afenifere and drawing ere from concerned Northern Groups.
First Northern group to boldly hit Baba-Ahmed on this, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, has been joined by ALD which described his actions as desperate, misplaced and deliberate acting of a southern script against the interests of the the North and its future relevance.
The ALD, like the AYCF, in a statement by its Secretary General, Suleiman Abbah said Baba-Ahmed’s persistent calls for the resignation of the President in the middle of an election season is belated, ill-informed, mischievous and a threat to democracy by aiming to scuttle the 2023 elections in which Nigerians have made huge investments.
“Recently, we have observed that Baba-Ahmed, cheered on by CAN and some powerful southern interests, has embarked on a self-destructive unilateral crusade against the person of President Buhari and select elders of the North.
“While the repetitive call for a President’s resignation a few months to the end of his tenure is belated, diversionary and suspicious, Baba-Ahmed’s recent frontal attacks on Professor Ango Abdullahi is a confirmation of a plot against northern interests using collaborators from within,” Abbah said.
ALD said the fact that in both instances Baba-Ahmed enjoyed the full backing of Afenifere and CAN suggests a dangerous plot against democracy aimed at scuttling the coming elections and in particular weaken the formidable Northern front represented by Ango Abdullahi and the NEF.
