Supplementary polls: Sokoto police secures process, talk tough against miscreants, disruptions , others

The police command in Sokoto state have issued warning to potential miscreants and violators of the law steer clear from getting involved in actions that are totally repugnant to natural justice, equity, fairness and good conscience.

Briefing newsmen Wednesday in Sokoto ahead of the April 15th, 2023 NASS and state assembly supplementary elections in the state, the Commissioner of Police ,Mr Mohammed Usaini Gumel said the command in conjunction with other action agencies were closely sustaining vigilance and taking proactive measures against disgruntled elements.

Gumel also assured the law abiding people of the state of the police preparedness to provide the best form of security for the forthcoming supplementary elections and required relevant stakeholders to cooperate with the security officials with high degree of honesty for the sustenance of the peace.

Hitherto , Gumel said the command would not spare those taking advantage of the recent elections victories and losses to engage in crimes capable of disrupting the peace being enjoyed in the state.

Accordingly , the police Boss in the state disclosed that the command had experienced some disturbing cases of various crimes across Tureta, Sokoto North , Gwadabawa and in Sokoto metropolis by desperate persons involved in threats, direct or indirect including causing grievous harm, criminal intimidation, extortion, looting, arsons, mischief or head-bent warning that they should desist from that.

He added” criminal conspiracy, , attempt to commit homicide and mischief, wanton destruction of property “, were among the various offences perpetrated during victory celebrations of the governorship election in the state.

He recalled that no fewer than 79 arrests were made by security agencies under the state ICCES joint operations committee for violating the movement restrictions order and other offences that contravened the Electoral Act such as engaging in vote buying, destruction of ballot boxes, thuggery, threats and inciting public disturbances at polling units, among others.

” Let me assure you that all these electoral offenders were fully investigated and already transferred to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for prosecution. However, others that contravened the penal code have been charged to court by the Police. There are others that are still under investigation and will be prosecuted at the conclusion of investigation.”

While on victims of any form of persecution following the Governorship and state assembly elections victory to report same to the command and not to take laws into their hands ,Gumel reminded the public that the command’s Special Investigation Team recently inaugurated before the election was still existing and is being conducting speedy and seamless investigations.

He reiterated that the command under his watch would not tolerate any attempt by persons to champion a state of anarchy while cautioning against existing and potential peddlers of fake news, hate speech and all forms of false narratives as basis to ignite violence or abyss the people against the present or incoming administration in the State are advised to stop forthwith.

” Those inciting violence have nothing to gain as doing so will not only consume them, so also the innocent ones. The command assures of enjoying a safe and secure life after the general elections as it has put in place necessary measures to checkmate these elements and is fully determined to keep arresting all trouble makers who will be will be treated as common criminals to be brought to justice.”
