NASS Should Review Contracts Between Nigeria and China: A Matter of National Emergency

The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) urgently calls on the National Assembly of Nigeria to recognize the recent seizure of three Presidential Jets and residential properties in Canada, France, and the United Kingdom by Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Limited, a Chinese firm, as a national emergency.

These actions are a direct result of a $70 million arbitration fine slammed on Nigeria due to 2010 bilateral agreement involving the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone, which is owned by the Ogun State Government. Given the gravity of this situation, we urge the National Assembly to urgently conduct a comprehensive review of all contracts between Nigeria and China, including those signed by the Federal Government, State Governments, and any agreements with the Chinese government or private Chinese companies.

The NCYP is deeply concerned by the seizure of Nigeria’s valuable assets as such as the three Presidential Jets—the Dassault Falcon 7X, a Boeing 737, and an Airbus 330—and two residential properties in London. These assets are not only of significant value but also symbolize our national sovereignty and pride. Their unlawful seizure undermines Nigeria’s interests and international standing.

We strongly urge the National Assembly, as the legislative authority and a key arm of government, to collaborate closely with the President Tinubu-led Federal Government to protect Nigeria’s foreign assets from such predatory actions. It is crucial that every agreement is thoroughly scrutinized to prevent further economic losses and safeguard the nation’s wealth.

Furthermore, we call on the National Assembly to summon the former Governors of Ogun State, Governor Gbenga Daniel and his successor, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, for a thorough investigation into their involvement in these agreements. The specifics of their roles must be carefully examined, and any individual found guilty of negligence or misconduct must be held accountable. It is unjust for the Nigerian people to bear the financial burden of a $70 million arbitration compensation due to the reckless actions of a few.

The NCYP believes that accountability and transparency are essential to prevent future incidents of this nature. We are committed to supporting all efforts to protect Nigeria’s assets and to ensure that those responsible for this national embarrassment are brought to justice.

We urge all Nigerians to unite in this cause and remain vigilant in defending our national interests.
