SOSG purchases N1.7bn relief for flood victims –SEMA

 

Sokoto State Government has purchased assorted relief materials for distribution to flood victims worth over N1.7billion.

The Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Emergency Management (SEMA),Alhaji Bashir Muhammad, disclosed when he addressed newsmen on Tuesday in Sokoto.

Muhammad also gave an update on the commendable and plausible efforts by the state government to provide immediate succour to the flood victims in 22 out of the 23 local governments of the state.

He said that it is only Sokoto North Local Government that has not been affected by the devastating flood that occured in the state in the past few weeks.

The Executive Secretary listed the items to assorted food stuffs like rice, maize and garri, among others.

The relief materials also include wrappers, brocade, mattrases, cement, ceiling boards, roofing sheets, blankets and an array of plastic wares.

Muhammad also stated that the relief materials include 20 motorized boats and 1,000 life jackets to be distributed to some riverine communities of the state.

Meanwhile, the flood disaster has affected 68,000 households across the state, with 31,000 houses destroyed.

Muhammad further stated that no fewer than 37,880 farmalands were dstoryed by the flood disaster, resulting in colossal losses of assorted farm produce.

He said that no fewer than 280 casualties were recorded as a result of the devastating flood disaster, with some deaths recorded.

In a related development, the ES said that the Agency has set up three IDP camps in Tambuwal, Shagari, Gada and Tureta LGAs.

This, he said, was to provide the direly needed temporary accommodation to the distressed and displaced victims.

Muhammad said that in Tambuwal LGA, the camps were established in Romon-Sarki and Sanyinna.

In Tureta LGA, the camps were set up in Tsamiya and Lofa, while Iin Illela LGA, the camps are domiciled in Illela town and Amarawa.

In Gada, Muhammad said that the camp was set up in Darna Tsolawo.

The Executive Secretary happily disclosed that the State Executive Council has approved the immediate commencement of the distribution exercise to the victims across the state.

While commending Gov. Ahmed Aliyu for according top priority to the activities of the Agency, Muhammad promised not to fail him and the entire people of the state.

“We will soon swing into action and judiciously distribute the relief materials to all the verified victims to alleviate their suffering,”he vowed.
