Sokoto State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists has appealed to the state government to complete all inherited projects initiated by the immediate past administration especially those deemed beneficial to the people of the state.
The union made the call in a communique issued at the end of its congress held on Saturday.
The communique jointly signed by its Chairman, Dalhatu Abdullahi Safiyel Magori and Secretary, Nasiru Bello said among projects inherited and needing completion include Sokoto Central Market, the State University Teaching Hospital and the 3 Premier Hospitals amongst others.
” These projects were initiated for the overall development of the State”, the communique pointed out.
Hitherto, the union commended the Dr Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto led government for initiating laudable projects , rehabilitation of others and the beautification of roads within the metropolis in 100 days.
The communique also observed with commendation the strategic focus of the state government on extending support to security agencies towards fighting insecurity even as it appealed for more to be done by both government and the general public in that direction to end the menace for a crime free Sokoto state.
” The general public should cooperate with and appreciate the efforts of security agencies and desist from taking laws into their hands”, the communique stressed.
On palliatives , the union urged the state government to intensify efforts in the distribution of the items while appealing for more palliatives in view of the current economic realities.
While advising the state government to urgently put to use, the recently launched Inter- State and Intrastate commuter buses to ease the challenge of transportation price hike orchestrated by the fuel subsidy removal, the union acknowledged and appreciated the state government for reviving monthly stipends to People Living with Disabilities (PLWD) as it called on both government and public spirited individuals to help discourage underage begging phenomenon and provide befitting resettlement camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) roaming the streets in the state metropolis.
However, on the state of the union, the Council members urged for improved welfare for its members adding ” the welfare of Journalists should be looked into as motivator for professionalism and ethical standards in reportage.”
While stressing the urgent need for members to consistently uphold the ethics of the profession as watch dogs of the society, the state council also reiterated regular training and retraining of journalists by all media organizations as priority.
